Tilt is the single biggest destroyer of bankrolls. Recognizing the warning signs and stopping before it escalates is the difference between surviving and going broke.
What Is Tilt?
Tilt is any emotional state that causes you to deviate from optimal play. It’s not just anger — frustration, boredom, overconfidence, and desperation are all forms of tilt.
Types of Tilt
Injustice tilt: ‘How can they call with that?’ — triggered by bad beats
Entitlement tilt: ‘I deserve to win this pot’ — triggered by ego
Revenge tilt: ‘I’ll get my money back from this player’ — triggered by losses to a specific opponent
Desperation tilt: ‘I need to recover my losses NOW’ — triggered by a downswing
Boredom tilt: playing hands out of boredom rather than strategy
Warning Signs
Playing hands you normally fold
Increasing bet sizes out of frustration
Calling bets you know are bad ‘just to see’
Feeling angry, anxious, or desperate
Refusing to leave the table when losing
Tilt Management Protocol
Step 1: Recognize the signs (self-awareness)
Step 2: Take an immediate break (stand up, walk away)
Step 3: Set a mandatory cooling-off period (minimum 15 minutes)
Step 4: Review what triggered the tilt
Step 5: Return only when calm and focused
