Building a hand plan before each decision transforms poker from reactive guessing into proactive strategy.
Why Plan?
Without a plan, you react to opponent actions street by street. With a plan, you anticipate scenarios and make faster, better decisions.
The Steps of a Hand Plan
1. Define your hand and its relative strength
2. Estimate the opponent’s range
3. Identify your objective (value, protection, bluff)
4. Plan actions for flop, turn, and river
5. Identify cards that change your plan
Example Plan
You have K♠K♥ on the BTN, raise, BB calls. Plan: c-bet most flops, barrel turns that don’t bring an ace, value bet rivers where you’re ahead.
Thinking Backwards From the River
An advanced technique: start by imagining how the hand could end at the river, then work backwards to determine the best flop and turn actions.
Adapting the Plan Mid-Hand
A plan is an intention, not an obligation. If the opponent does something unexpected, reassess and adjust. The best players adapt without abandoning structure.
