Bet sizing: Choosing the right bet size (simple and effective)

Your bet size tells a story. Learn to choose the right sizing for every board texture and opponent type.

Your bet sizing is one of the most strategic aspects of poker. Each size tells a story and creates a different dynamic.

Fundamental Sizing Principles

Each sizing sends a signal. A large bet says ‘I have a strong hand or I want you to fold.’ A small bet says ‘I’m inducing a call or testing the waters.’

Common Sizings and Their Uses

25-33% pot: dry boards, thin value, low-risk bluffs

50% pot: standard all-purpose, good risk/reward balance

67-75% pot: protection on wet boards, strong semi-bluffs

100%+ pot (overbet): strong polarization, nuts or total bluff

Sizing Consistency

Use the same sizings with your value hands and your bluffs to remain unreadable. If you bet big only with strong hands, opponents will fold every time.

Sizing Based on Board Texture

Dry board (K72 rainbow): 25-33% is enough, few draws to protect against

Coordinated board (J109 two-tone): 50-75%, protection and value needed

Monotone board: 50-75%, strong flush representation

Adapting to Opponents

Against calling stations, bet larger with value hands — they’ll call regardless. Against nits, smaller bets get the same folds cheaper.

🎯

  • 125-33% on dry boards, 50-75% on wet boards, overbet for polarized ranges.
  • 2Use the same sizing for value and bluffs — consistency prevents reads.
  • 3Against calling stations: bet bigger for value. Against nits: bet smaller for the same folds.
