Spin & Go poker: format, multipliers and variance explained

Everything you need to know about Spin & Go tournaments: how multipliers work, what the variance really looks like, and whether they're profitable.

What Are Spin & Go Tournaments?

Spin & Go's are 3-player hyper-turbo sit-and-go tournaments with a random prize multiplier. Before the game starts, a wheel spins to determine the prize pool — typically between 2x and 10,000x the buy-in.

How Multipliers Work

The distribution is heavily weighted toward the low end: about 75% of games are 2x, 20% are 3-5x, 4% are 10-25x, and 0.5% are 100x+. The vast majority of sessions will be grinding 2x games, with big wins coming from rare multiplier hits.

Understanding the Variance

Spin & Go variance is brutal. Even a winning player can experience 1,000+ game downswings, months without a significant multiplier hit, and bankroll swings of 50+ buy-ins in a single session. The variance comes from two sources: the random multiplier (which you can't control) and the actual poker.

Are Spin & Go's Profitable?

For most players: marginally, if at all. The rake is typically 6-8%, significantly higher than cash games. Players who profit consistently play high volume (1,000+ games/month), use push/fold charts, manage bankroll conservatively (75-100 buy-ins), and collect meaningful rakeback.

Should You Play Them?

If you enjoy the format and can handle the variance, they're fine for recreational play. Just be realistic: treat big multipliers as a fun lottery bonus. For serious profit, cash games and regular MTTs offer better hourly rates. Use our variance simulator to see what 1,000+ Spin & Go's look like for your win rate.
