Satellite strategy: how to qualify for live poker festivals
Satellites are the cheapest path to major live events. Here's the specific strategy adjustments that maximize your qualification rate.
Satellites Are Not Regular Tournaments
The biggest mistake in satellite play is treating them like a normal MTT. In a satellite, you don't need to win — you just need to finish in the qualifying positions. Every qualifying spot pays the same, so a massive stack has almost no extra value over a medium stack.
Early Game: Build a Comfortable Stack
Play normally in the early stages with standard TAG play. Your goal is to reach the bubble with an above-average stack. Don't go crazy with speculative hands or hero calls.
The Bubble: Where Satellites Are Won
With a big stack: stop playing big pots — you're already qualifying. With a medium stack: tighten up significantly and fold hands you'd normally play. With a short stack: find one good spot to shove, targeting other short stacks' blinds.
Key Satellite Rules
Never call an all-in on the bubble with a qualifying stack — even with A♠A♥. Attack short stacks' blinds since they'll fold too much. Avoid coin-flip situations near the bubble. Don't try to accumulate once you're safe. The most cost-efficient path is usually through multi-step satellites where your initial investment is tiny relative to the target event.
