Bankroll management in 2026: updated rules that work

The bankroll rules have evolved. Here's what actually works in 2026 for cash games, tournaments, and Spin & Go's.

Why Traditional Bankroll Rules Need Updating

The classic "20 buy-ins for cash games" advice was designed for a different era. Games have gotten tougher, variance in modern formats is higher, and the rise of hyper-turbo formats like Spin & Go's has changed the math completely.

Cash Game Guidelines

For most players, the sweet spot is: recreational players need 20 buy-ins minimum, serious grinders need 30-40 buy-ins, and shot-taking requires at least 10 buy-ins at the next level with a stop-loss plan. At NL50, that means a serious player needs $1,500-$2,000 dedicated to poker.

Tournament and Spin & Go Bankroll

MTTs have massive variance. Even winning players can go 100+ tournaments without a significant cash. Small field MTTs need 50 buy-ins, large field MTTs need 100-150, and high-variance formats like turbos need 50% more. Spin & Go's have the highest variance in poker: conservative players need 100 buy-ins, standard is 75, and aggressive pros might survive on 50 with strict move-down rules.

The Most Important Rule: Move Down Fast

Your ego is your bankroll's worst enemy. Set a clear rule: if you lose X buy-ins at your current level, move down immediately. No exceptions. A common framework: move down after losing 5 buy-ins in a single session, or when your bankroll drops below the minimum for your level.

Stop-Loss and Shot-Taking

Quit the session after losing 3 buy-ins to prevent tilt-fueled destruction. For shot-taking: when your bankroll reaches the minimum for the next level, play 5 sessions, and if you haven't won at least 2, move back down. Track every session with our bankroll calculator to determine the right stakes for your current roll.
