Pot control is the art of keeping the pot at a manageable size when you have a medium-strength hand that can’t handle a big pot.
Why Control the Pot?
With medium hands (weak top pair, medium pair), growing the pot puts you in a tough spot. You win small pots but lose big ones.
Pot Control Techniques
Check behind in position on the flop or turn with a marginal hand
Bet small (25-33%) to see an extra street without committing too much
Check-call rather than bet-call to reduce pot size
Avoid raises with medium-value hands
When Pot Control Is Appropriate
You have a hand that wins small pots often but loses big ones
The board is very coordinated and your potential outs against an aggressive opponent are limited
Your opponent is very aggressive and could have a very strong hand
Pot Control vs Value
Don’t confuse pot control with passivity. If your hand is clearly ahead of the opponent’s range, bet for value — pot control is for genuinely marginal spots.
The Danger of Excessive Pot Control
Too much pot control makes you exploitable. If you always check medium hands, opponents will bet aggressively knowing you’ll fold.
