Defending the big blind: When to call and when to fold

Big blind defense is one of the most underrated skills. Poor BB play is a massive leak that bleeds away your stack orbit after orbit.

The BB Price Advantage

In the BB, you’ve already invested one BB in the pot. Facing a raise, your effective call is discounted — you’re getting better odds than any other position.

How Often to Defend?

GTO theory says you must defend enough to make blind steals unprofitable for your opponents. The exact frequency depends on the raiser’s position:

Facing a BTN 2.5 BB raise: defend about 45-55% of hands

Facing a CO raise: defend 40-45%

Facing a UTG raise: be very selective (15-20%)

Which Hands to Defend?

Pairs: all pairs benefit from the discounted price in BB

Suited hands: strong drawing value

Connectors: 65o, 75o can defend from the BB

Ace-x hands: potential top pair value

3-Betting from the BB

Don’t be purely passive in the BB. The 3-bet from the BB is an important weapon: you take the initiative and build a pot when you have an equity advantage.

3-bet your value range (10♠10♥+, A♠J♠+) and some strategic bluffs (suited aces, suited connectors).

The Over-Folding Mistake

Folding too often in the BB is a common mistake. Every fold in the BB represents abandoning the price advantage you already have. Against wide openers, defend aggressively.
