3-bet: Re-raising for value and as a bluff (beginner version)
The 3-bet is one of poker’s most powerful weapons. Learn to re-raise for value and as a bluff.
The 3-bet is one of the most powerful weapons in modern poker. Knowing when and how to 3-bet separates recreational players from winning ones.
Why 3-Bet?
A 3-bet accomplishes several goals simultaneously: it builds the pot with your best hands, folds out marginal hands, and puts maximum pressure on your opponent.
Building a Balanced 3-Bet Range
An effective 3-bet range contains two types of hands: value hands and bluffs. This balance prevents opponents from easily exploiting you.
Value: A♠A♥, K♠K♥, Q♠Q♥, J♠J♥, 10♠10♥, A♠K♠, A♠Q♠, A♠K♥ (always play these for maximum value)
Ideal bluffs: A♠5♠, A♠4♠, A♠3♠, A♠2♠ (blockers on A♠A♥/AK + flush potential if called)
Avoid as bluffs: hands with no equity or blockers (73o, 62o)
3-Bet Sizing
In position (you have the button): 3x the opponent’s raise
Out of position (you’re in the BB): 3.5 to 4x the raise
The larger size out of position compensates for your informational disadvantage and forces the opponent to make tighter decisions.
Facing a 3-Bet: Your Options
Fold: with most marginal hands
Call: with hands that have good implied odds and position
4-bet: with your best hands and some bluffs
Never call a 3-bet with too wide a range — it’s often the most costly decision beginners make.
Identifying Good 3-Bet Bluff Spots
Opponent who open-raises very wide and folds often to 3-bets
You have postflop position
Your hand has blockers to strong opponent hands
Balanced 3-bet range: value hands + bluffs with low suited aces.
